Guyra Argus Newspaper Index - 1902 to 1926

Guyra is a small community located at the top of the Northern Tablelands in the beautiful New England region, approximately half way between Sydney and Brisbane.  Click here to find out more about Guyra.

The first newspaper to be called the 'Guyra Argus' was first published in Guyra on 30th July 1902 and continued to be published without a break for over 50 years. This Guyra Argus Newspaper Index has been created from copies of the extant editions of the Guyra Argus microfilmed by W & F Pascoe, Sydney, and will be added to over the next few years until the remaining copies are indexed. This index was started over twenty years ago and progressed very slowly (especially as we were both working full time) whilst entries were compiled onto 6" x 4" index cards. Recently, the information contained on the cards was re-typed into our own custom computer program and this program will be used for all future indexing. The indexing program allows for a much faster data input especially with marriages and multiple indexing of names appearing in conjunction with the same event.

In general, the three major life-centric events - births, marriages and deaths - have been indexed. In addition, other related events have been included such as inquests, legal notices and anniversaries. Because of the very useful relationship information contained in obituaries, separate entries have been made for the husband, children and siblings, where present.  This may result in several similar named entries for the same event such as -
